Thanks Jared,

The complete problem and solution here was:
I needed python2.5-dev and this also blows my mind, but it is a new  
install of Ubuntu and I had to do an apt-get install g++ to get all  
the c++ header files it wanted.

Finally (thanks windmill book) sudo easy_install-2.5 install windmill

I definitely forgot some of the linux requirements after using macosx  
daily.
