You need to have "-ljava"; that is what causes the Java libraries to
be linked into Python extensions built with JCC (like PyLucene).

You are right in thinking that's what caused the error:
  ImportError: 
  /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/JCC-1.7-py2.5-linux-i686.egg/jcc/_jcc.so: 
  undefined symbol: JNI_GetDefaultJavaVMInitArgs

Instead of modifying this (you should only be changing the Makefile,
which I believe in your system is in the directory
/usr/src/PyLucene-2.3.0-1/), try setting the JAVA_HOME environment
variable before you do the "make":

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.04

then do "make".
