Problem persits.

While pylucene is absolutely adorable project for me, providing amazing
capabilities, i'd suggest you try Solr.

It is pretty easy to setup and you can then use XML-over-HTTP requests.
There is even a great python interfacing library available.

It takes some time to get used to the concept of "search engine as a
local web service". But in the end, when you add up all pros and cons,
it makes a lot of sense.
