Yes, gcj 3.4.x should work. You can get binaries for Linux here:
http://downloads.osafoundation.org/compilers/linux/gcc-3.4.5.tar.gz

The file size limit problem is fixed in gcj 4.x and, like I said earlier, gcj 
4.2.0 seems to be working well.
