Ah, good thought.  I thought I'd upgraded this machine, but

% gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.3 20030304 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 1495)

I'll upgrade to the latest tools (well, XCode 2.2.1 -- I've got that on
CD) and try again from scratch.
