I've had no luck with gcj 4.1.1 on Ubuntu. Yes, you're using 4.0.3 but I've 
never tried that one. The combination I've tried on Ubuntu and that seems to 
work well is PyLucene 2.0.0 and gcj 3.4.6 built from sources (as described in 
PyLucene's INSTALL).
