Great - thanks!  The good news is that that build works perfectly.  The bad
news is that I'm now at home on a different machine, and the old build works
here as well.  So we'll have to wait until Monday, when I can try the new
build on my work machine, to know whether it really fixes things.

The main difference between the two machines is that the one at work is a
hyperthreaded Pentium 4, so it's effectively multiprocessor.  Don't know
whether that's relevant, but it could well be.

Nick: is your Win2K box multiprocessor?
