Are eggs ready for consumption ?
That or a distutils-based build would be great.
Another option would be a configure script, I'm not sure all that the Makefile 
is doing is supported by distutils (I know nothing about eggs yet).

Indeed, distributing the SWIG-generated files would simplify this quite a bit.
