I have seen this - it triggered an error in an iCal library I wrote that 
did not support PERIODs in RDATEs. I think I saw this in Notes generated 
iCal data.

There are some valid use cases where using PERIOD is handy, though all it 
does is allow you to not have to have an explicitly overridden instance 
when all you want to do is change the duration of one or two instances.
