[Dev] are functional tests broken ?

On an unmodified trunk, rev 9486, running tools/do_tests -f . doesn't do 
nearly as much as it used to. The show is much shorter. The tests finish with 
a stack trace and 'all tests successful'. Somehow that doesn't look very 
convincing. What's going on ?
