empty vs 1k vs 3k calendar performance

Because the data sets aren't exactly equivalent, we can't draw exact
conclusions.

But it would seem that performance with the 1k calendar is twice as fast
(or more) as with the 3k calendar. Or in other words, if we can get the
3k calendar cases to about twice above the acceptable values then the
performance should be acceptable with 1k calendar.
