FWIW, I downloaded and built the stock python 2.4.1 distribution  
yesterday with no problems. My gcc says it's

powerpc-apple-darwin8-gcc-4.0.0 (GCC) 4.0.0 20041026 (Apple Computer,  
Inc. build 4061)

In case it's relevant, I did an archive (not upgrade) install, and  
then installed XCode 2 from the Tiger DVD.
