You're on the bleeding edge here.. You say 'gcj 3.4 is broken', can you 
eloborate ? I built gcj 3.4.4 on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows (cross-built on 
Gentoo linux) and it works quite well.
Your mileage with gcj 4.0 is bound to vary.

Try this, at the shell, run the RunPython script, then import PyLucene

If this doesn't work, try a 4.1 snapshot of gcj or build your own gcj 3.4.4
