Yes, your summary is good.

You know, I really haven't noticed myself wanting this behavior. I'm
not noted for being an intense calendar user, though, so I can believe
this use case is out there for other folks.
I'm curious, how often do current dogfooders deliberately click on an
overlaid calendar to switch which calendar is on top? How often do
other folks experience this behavior when it's not what they want?

Yeah, this is the most jarring scenario for me.

So in this workflow, what would a user have to do to stop overlaying a
collection? They'd have to click on the check box? Or would clicking
anywhere on a non-top collection cause it to become unchecked?
Having sidebar selection mechanics be modal seems a little scary to me.
Also, I really like only having to click once to unselect the old
try-out collection and select a new try-out collection, so I'd be
hesitant to move to this system.
