Just a side comment on implementation details: We can't get too 
complicated with transparency without some big performance hits (mostly 
because the only way to do anything with transparency is to draw 
whatever we want onto an internal image, apply transparency to the 
image, and then try to slap that image on top of whatever we want)

So if its something as simple as writing some text, that might be 
doable..I think we could come up with a way to do what you mocked up, 
though maybe not with the HK :)

We unfortunately can't do vertically oriented text easily, or I'd 
suggest maybe something along the legend to the left..
