This seems to me to be merely a cosmetical issue, and if I have sidebar
entries that simply won't fit in the current width it would seem more
important to me that they fit as opposed to making minicalendar look nice.

I am generally against custom control work. I'd much rather we innovate
on functionality rather than in polish.

It seems like this would be trivial to do. Just add a menu item to
revert to default layout and size.
