[Design] Viewing related items

I sketched out an alternate (multi-pane approach) to Alec's proposal
for viewing "related items" that might be feasible in 0.7/0.8?
Proposed workflow for viewing related items:
+ Select an item in the summary pane (calendar or table)
+ If the item points to other items (ie. a person, a project
collection, etc), then a separate "Related items" pane appears
beneath the summary pane.
+ The detail view shows the details of the selected item in the pane
that has focus.
+ Nice to have: You can drag and drop to add and remove items from
the "Related items" pane
Proposed workflow for viewing threads of items:
+ Select an item in the summary pane (calendar or table)
+ If the item is in a thread of items (ie. email thread, event
series, user-defined task dependencies or just any user-defined
"thread: meaning a list of items with a particular order"), then a
thread pane appears beneath the summary pane.
+ The detail view shows the details of the selected item in the
pane that has focus.
+ You can drag and drop to add and remove items from the "thread" pane
If we do both of these workflows, we will need to figure out a way to
distinguish between viewing related items versus viewing a thread of
items OR we can figure out a way to combine the two into a single pane.

> Just to recap: the main topic of the session was exploring how
> people make progress on processing their information and completing
> tasks...which for Chandler roughly translates into: What metadata
> do people need to attach to their items.
>
> We spent the first half of the session on a brainstorm exercise to
> get a rough sampling of different types of metadata (referring back
> to the list of tasks we came up with last time).
>
> We then proceeded to sketch out some rough UI ideas for both:
> + how users fill-in predefined metadata fields, as well as
> + how users might be able to define their own metadata
>
> For those of you who attended the session, please feel free to add
> your own comments to the notes page, I'm sure I forgot stuff :o)
