How about making it a (not necessarily easy-to-get-to) preference? It  
would be nice to have some way of collecting people's usage  
preferences (voluntarily of course through some sort of "send  
feedback to OSAF" button) so we can see how they prefer to use Chandler.

I'm a big fan of preferences to allow people to work the way they  
want. Of course, being open source, I can always just change the code  
for my personal version too.
