[Design] [D/f] Troubles with trying to share a Household calendar

Below is a record of me (hamstar) trying to get a "fellow household
member" (frawgondalawg) to share a Home calendar in Chandler.

A few issues that arose:

SHARING
+ Inability to re-subscribe to a deleted collection was a serious
blocker. (Morgen is this a bug already?)

+ User was afraid that deleting a share from his sidebar would delete
it from the server AND from my sidebar

+ I unpublished the Home collection, deleted it from my sidebar and
reimported the Home.ics file from my desktop so that it would have a
different UUID and re-published it to Cosmo. Frawondalawg was able to
subscribe to it successfully and add events to it.

+ When Frawgondalawg tried to sync with the server, the server
rejected his changes and told him that he was "Not authorized to
PUT", which made him think that he didn't have write access to the
share. (Scroll to bottom to see error message.)

+ However, upon closer examination, we realized that the "Not
authorized to PUT" error message was referring to the Home collection
I had unpublished. So, we need a more elegant error message to tell
sharees that a share has been unpublished.

DELETING
+ DELETE key not working for collections was confusing
+ User had subscribed to 2 different Home collections and couldn't
tell which one was the one he wanted to get rid of. User also did not
know that the sidebar collections were ordered by date created/added

NAVIGATION
+ User expected items in the selected calendar to be reflected on the
mini-calendar
+ Even after turning a Not-mine share into a Mine share, the events
didn't get reflected in the mini-calendar (not sure if this was just
a refresh problem)

+ Switching to just a List view for Trash was jarring
+ User expected to be able to navigate back to a calendar view with
the mini-cal while in the Trash collection

Some background info: 2 weeks ago, I published a Home collection and
sent the read-write URL to frawondalawg, who today used that URL to
subscribe to the share in his newly installed Chandler.

Unfortunately, last week, I had wiped by repository and started fresh
with a new instance of Chandler. So I reimported by Home.ics file
from Apple iCal and published that to Cosmo and sent the new URL to
Frawondalawg. Frawgondalawg then set about trying to subscribe to the
"new" Home calendar...

frawgondalawg (12:59:06 PM): I got a permissions error with the above
link
hamstar (12:59:13 PM): huh?
hamstar (12:59:21 PM): lemme try again
frawgondalawg (12:59:31 PM): https://cosmo-demo.osafoundation.org/
blahblah gives me a permissions error (401) usernamed
hamstar (12:59:39 PM): Read-write: https://cosmo-
demo.osafoundation.org/blahblah
frawgondalawg (1:00:25 PM): I got it but don't see anything on the
calendar
hamstar (1:00:35 PM): well there's nothing for this week
frawgondalawg (1:00:47 PM): don't see anything on the month view either
hamstar (1:01:00 PM): you mean the mini-cal?
frawgondalawg (1:01:07 PM): ja
hamstar (1:01:12 PM): that's because the calendar isn't in your My
calendar
frawgondalawg (1:01:16 PM): also, how do I get rid of the other Home
calendar
hamstar (1:01:19 PM): do you want Home to be a part of "My calendar"?
frawgondalawg (1:01:27 PM): the one I subscribed to before
hamstar (1:01:29 PM): i dunno
hamstar (1:01:34 PM): what should you do?
hamstar (1:01:43 PM): i'm gonna send this whole conversation to the
design list...hahaha
hamstar (1:02:25 PM): Do you want the Home calendar to be a part of
your "My calendar"? or what
frawgondalawg (1:02:33 PM): I did that
hamstar (1:02:38 PM): you changed that?
hamstar (1:02:43 PM): howd you know how to do that?
frawgondalawg (1:02:46 PM): but its not clear that doing that means
that my calendar will now sync up to your thing
hamstar (1:03:04 PM): how did you "do that"
frawgondalawg (1:03:29 PM): mimi I don't have time for this now
frawgondalawg (1:03:45 PM): I wanted to quickly make it so that you
would have the info for your flights and our things that I have on my
calendar
hamstar (1:03:47 PM): no i'm genuinely curious
frawgondalawg (1:03:52 PM): there's a menu item
frawgondalawg (1:03:55 PM): I clicked it
hamstar (1:03:56 PM): oh yay
hamstar (1:04:02 PM): howd you know to look there though
hamstar (1:04:05 PM): did i already tell you
frawgondalawg (1:04:09 PM): I don't know
frawgondalawg (1:04:13 PM): I looked under all the menus
hamstar (1:04:14 PM): great thanks
hamstar (1:04:16 PM): okay
frawgondalawg (1:04:25 PM): you didn't answer my question
hamster (1:04:29 PM): which is
frawgondalawg (1:04:38 PM): (13:02:25) hamstar: Do you want the Home
calendar to be a part of your "My calendar?"
(13:02:32) frawgondalawg: I did that
(13:02:38) hamstar: you changed that?
(13:02:43) hamstar: howd you know how to do that?
(13:02:45) frawgondalawg: but its not clear that doing that means
that my calendar will now sync up to tyour thing
hamstar (1:04:40 PM): oh and you have to manually sync or your
changes won't go up to the server
hamstar (1:05:00 PM): "My calendar" the collection or you calendar as
in all the stuff in your Chandler
hamstar (1:05:06 PM): what do you mean by My calendar
frawgondalawg (1:05:15 PM): whatever you meant by it
frawgondalawg (1:05:17 PM): I clicked the button
hamstar (1:05:23 PM): the what button
frawgondalawg (1:05:28 PM): are you going to get everything I put in
my calendar or not
frawgondalawg (1:05:32 PM): the menu item we just discussed
hamstar (1:05:40 PM): did you sync?
frawgondalawg (1:05:45 PM): YES
hamstar(1:05:52 PM): okay i'm syncing now too
hamstar (1:06:05 PM): were you worried about events in your "My
calendar" collection syncing with me?
frawgondalawg (1:06:20 PM): I want you to get all the stuff I put in
there somehow
hamstar (1:06:22 PM): it will only sync with me if you add it to the
Home collection, we're not sharing your My calendar collection, but
were you confused about that?
hamstar (1:06:25 PM): put in where
hamstar (1:06:30 PM): you need to tell me where you put it
hamstar (1:07:15 PM): herro?
frawgondalawg (1:08:15 PM): well I have 2 Home collections
frawgondalawg (1:08:21 PM): if you tell me how to get rid of them, I
will
frawgondalawg (1:08:33 PM): otherwise I'm going to quit chandler
right now and do this tonight or tomorrow
hamstar (1:08:35 PM): did you add them to the new Home collection?
that's the one i have
hamstar (1:08:38 PM): no no
frawgondalawg (1:08:41 PM): I have 2 Home collections
hamstar (1:08:44 PM): or the old Home collection
frawgondalawg (1:08:46 PM): b/c you created a new one
hamstar (1:08:51 PM): right
frawgondalawg (1:09:13 PM): what part don't you understand: TELL ME
HOW TO GET RID OF A SUBSCRIPTION
hamstar (1:09:29 PM): delete the collection from the sidebar
frawgondalawg (1:09:34 PM): I tried
frawgondalawg (1:09:38 PM): nothing happened
hamstar (1:09:39 PM): how did you try
frawgondalawg (1:09:45 PM): I hit delete
frawgondalawg (1:09:50 PM): I right clicked
hamstar (1:09:54 PM): the keyboard key?
frawgondalawg (1:09:54 PM): nothing
frawgondalawg (1:09:56 PM): yes
hamstar (1:10:02 PM): what's another way you can delete things normally
frawgondalawg (1:10:06 PM): MIMI
hamstar (1:10:10 PM): yes there's a known bug, neither of those work
frawgondalawg (1:10:12 PM): let's do this tomorrow
hamstar(1:10:15 PM): no no no
hamstar (1:10:19 PM): loook under the edit menu
frawgondalawg (1:10:19 PM): TELL ME
hamstar (1:10:33 PM): select the collection you want to delete and
look under the edit menu
frawgondalawg (1:11:00 PM): that didn't work
hamstarr (1:11:04 PM): what?
hamstar (1:11:09 PM): don't you see something that says Delete
collection
frawgondalawg (1:11:14 PM): I just deleted your whole calendar
hamstar (1:11:19 PM): the home calendar
frawgondalawg (1:11:22 PM): when you sync it will all go away
frawgondalawg (1:11:24 PM): yup
hamstar (1:11:35 PM): well didn't you want to delete it?
frawgondalawg (1:11:43 PM): its going to delete it on your end to
frawgondalawg (1:11:46 PM): oh
frawgondalawg (1:11:54 PM): don't sync if you don't want to lose all
of your events
hamstar (1:12:08 PM): no
hamstar (1:12:13 PM): did you delete both Home collections?
frawgondalawg (1:12:16 PM): YES
frawgondalawg (1:12:19 PM): I couldn't tell them apart
frawgondalawg (1:12:29 PM): I figured I'd get rid of them, then re-
subscribe to the right one
hamstar (1:12:41 PM): it wont delete mine
hamstar (1:13:04 PM): but its important that you were scared to do that
hamstar (1:13:16 PM): it just got rid of yours
frawgondalawg (1:13:17 PM): well then how do I get it back
frawgondalawg (1:13:25 PM): I can't subscribe again
frawgondalawg (1:13:28 PM): but its gone
hamstar (1:13:29 PM): resubscribe
frawgondalawg (1:13:33 PM): won't let me
hamstar (1:13:35 PM): you can't
hamstar (1:13:37 PM): oh shit
hamstar (1:13:39 PM): yeah that's a bug
hamstar (1:13:50 PM): okay let me share it again
hamstar (1:13:55 PM): with a different url
hamstar (1:14:02 PM): the events you added should still be in your My
calendar
hamstar (1:14:08 PM): so you can just drag it and add it to the new
share
frawgondalawg (1:14:10 PM): no, they appear to be gone
hamstar (1:14:18 PM): oh
frawgondalawg (1:14:18 PM): the ones I added, yes
hamstar (1:14:22 PM): ok
frawgondalawg (1:14:25 PM): the ones from the collection that I added
to my, no
hamstar (1:15:06 PM): yeah thats fine
hamstar (1:15:16 PM): hmm that's weird
frawgondalawg (1:15:33 PM): actually, they do appear to be there, but
not on the mini-cal
hamstar (1:15:35 PM): the ones you added originally, did you add
those to Home directly or to My calendar and then dragged it to Home
hamstar (1:15:41 PM): oh really?
hamstar (1:15:50 PM): so the events are in your My Calendar, but
don't show up on the mini-cal
hamstar (1:15:55 PM): inneresting
frawgondalawg (1:16:03 PM): and, when I click on the minical, it
doesn't take me anywhere
hamstar (1:16:16 PM): whaddya mean?
hamstar (1:16:24 PM): Read-write: https://cosmo-
demo.osafoundation.org/home/blahblah
frawgondalawg (1:16:41 PM): I'm already subscribed
hamstar (1:16:49 PM): to the same collection?
hamstar (1:16:52 PM): i reshared it
frawgondalawg (1:16:54 PM): it says so
frawgondalawg (1:16:55 PM): no dice
hamster (1:16:56 PM): this should be a new ticket
frawgondalawg (1:17:03 PM): maybe it recognizes it
frawgondalawg (1:17:07 PM): same way it recognizes events
frawgondalawg (1:17:44 PM): if I double click on the trash, I see all
these things in the trash
frawgondalawg (1:17:50 PM): while in the trash, if I click on the
minical, it doesn't appear to do anything
hamstar (1:18:11 PM): well the trash is in a list view
hamstar (1:18:21 PM): so navigating with the minical isn't going to
take you anywhere in the list view
hamstar (1:18:33 PM): so the events from Home are in the trash NOT in
your My Calendar?
frawgondalawg (1:18:47 PM): maybe
frawgondalawg (1:18:48 PM): not sure
frawgondalawg (1:18:52 PM): hamstar we have to do this later
frawgondalawg (1:18:55 PM): I have to run
hamstar (1:18:55 PM): cokay
hamstar (1:18:57 PM): okay
hamstar (1:19:09 PM): thanks this was helpful
frawgondalawg (1:19:16 PM): k - sorry i was crappy
hamstar (1:19:22 PM): it's okay
frawgondalawg (1:19:26 PM): just thought I was going to be able to do
it in 2 minutes
hamstar (1:19:32 PM): yup
hamstar (1:19:40 PM): going to send this conversation to the design
list heh heh
hamstar (1:26:18 PM): why did you delete both Home collections?
frawgondalawg (1:27:36 PM): b/c I couldn't tell which was which
frawgondalawg (1:28:02 PM): I figured it was easier to kill them both
and then pull down the right one
hamstar (1:28:03 PM): oh
hamstar (1:28:11 PM): it adds them to the sidebar in order
