[Design] Bug 4610: preview area doesn't show events for a selected day in the day view

I'm forwarding this bug to the design list for more discussion as I'm  
not sure what the right thing to do interaction-wise is.

A bit of context: The preview pane above the mini-calendar was  
designed to provide users with an easy way to browse the contents of  
their calendar from the All, Mail and Task app areas without actually  
needing to switch context and go to the calendar app.

In the All, Mail, and Task app areas, the mini-calendar selection is  
always stuck on "day-mode". The preview pane displays a list of  
events for whatever day is selected in the mini-calendar.

In the Calendar app area, it was less clear what the right behavior  
should be:

+ One issue is, when the mini-calendar is in week-mode because the  
main calendar is in week mode, what should the preview pane display?
++ The events for the entire week starting on Sunday? That didn't  
seem too useful.
++ Create a sub-selection that is a particular day within the week?  
Visually that's challenging as we already have a lot going on in the  
mini-calendar with the busy-bars.

+ I also wasn't sure how useful it was to see a list of events for a  
selected day given that you can already see them on the main  
calendar. (The preview pane only displays events on your "My  
calendar" collection.)

+ It also seemed like it might be useful to persist a list of Today's  
events for people, so that no matter where you browse in the  
calendar, you can always see a list of your appointments for Today.

Is that feature useful to anyone? When people are browsing around on  
their calendar (say iCal or Outlook), how often do you switch back to  
Today in order to see what your next meeting is?
