sure - you would only have to escape those items that are command
triggers, but if the text area is primarily labeled "search" a new user
would be very confused to find the search for "/mail" (expecting to hit
items like with "/mail" in it) to suddenly cause a new message to
appear.
after reading the other replies I now see that the text area is
supposed to be a command area in which search is but one part of it's
duty - that to me makes a world of difference as the user goes into the
task knowing what context is required.
