I think, the text entry widget is not just a search bar. It is a 
"command line" which can be used to perform several tasks one of which 
is searching.  It was being called a search bar till now since it had no 
other functionality to it. So I dont think a new UI feature would be 
required then.

I am worried about the users not knowing too :) . That is why I think 
that the dropdown list would help showing the user, the options he can 
choose from. I was thinking that a small symbol to indicate searching 
and a small down arrow (like in Thunderbird) inside the text widget 
would help us instead of the current empty text box.
