I was just about to comment on the search bar being used for text entry 
as well. I always liked that small box which Microsoft Foxpro used to 
(still does?) have at the bottom of the screen. A floating text entry 
box  with a command prompt. Dockable of course.

But what strikes me is that Chandler already has a rather clunky 
interface - in terms of the number of things which are tacked on to the 
toolbars by default. A good idea here might be to reduce the number of 
calendars visible by default on the left to just the current month. 
Clicking a small button pops up a 3 month view. The space there might be 
utilized to have a small text entry box.

Alternatively, shorten the Event entry box on the right to take up half 
the space it does, and make the space left over the default dock for the 
new text entry box.
