I think a 1-pixel outline looks too much like "selection" in some 
applications. But 2-pixel outline would look a bit too jagged because it 
alternates colour and white pixels. Maybe a similarly visible but more 
pleasing effect would be to make this outline fuzzier by playing with 
the colours and their saturation?
