I'm not sure I understand 'unique to the App area'? You mean if I change 
the filter in the toolbar, then the overlays would reset themselves 
somehow? or that the Calendar App area would have its own set of 
overlays, and tasks would have another?

Colorizing tasks in the table is not a hard task (I'd SWAG it Small) - 
we could tackle it in Alpha3. It would be easier to colorize the tasks 
than it would be to special-case Tasks to be non-overlayed, or to have 
each App area have its own set of overlays.
