Interesting. I didn't know those papers but, of course it's not 
surprising to see the idea has been around. What inspired me was iPhoto 
way of scaling everything down or up and Tufte "small multiple" tenet: 
the human brain can synthetize interesting data from lots of them thrown 
at the eye all at the same time (if correctly done that is...). In 
iPhoto case I think everybody can appreciate how much you can get from a 
bunch of even very tiny pictures.

That plus the "bar/expand" idea and we do need Flash as Alec 
mentioned... though I'd vote for SVG myself... :)
