What you want is a newsreader feature, working on mail. You should probably try Gnus (the Emacs news reader). It has features of automatically "expiring" messages etc.

Normally I can't ignore e-mail: it may be important. But on mailing lists this is not usually the case: if one misses a few messages, it's more like not reading todays newspaper. This leads to different sorting criteria depending on the source, and certainly mailing lists would be treated differently than normal e-mail.
