Personally, so long as my email store is properly indexed and thus quickly accessible, I'm not too worried about threading or summarization.
My particular pet peeve is that too many people try to decide *for me* what I should or should not retain. I want to see what comes in and delete that which is not interesting to me, then consign the balance to a system which allows me to retrieve any given piece of information as necessary. The only exceptions, of course, would be purely spam messages for which I very much favor Bayesian filtering among the options I am presently aware of.
Another thing while we're discussing a "standard mail view with three (or whatever) views." If a mail client decides for me that I "must" view HTML mail in HTML view, then I simply won't use it. That's why I would like to be able to set the mail client to open all mail in text view, then to have it rendered as HTML if and when I choose.
Of course, I'd also like a filter to be able to send back a "nastygram" of my own composition to those who send HTML mail to tell them why I would normally appreciate text messages only!
