[Design] indexing?

Alternatively, one could convert any document hitting the system in, 
say, PDF. And then extract the textual part for indexing purpose. Why 
PDF? Why not :-) On the other hand, there are at least two reasons: 
first, it would make the indexing process much simpler as it will have 
to deal with only one format type. Second, converting everything to PDF 
gives a cheap and easy way of providing document previews. Even if you 
happen not to have the original application to "understand" a document. 
Which is another step toward a MS Office free world.
