I think there's a fair amount of parallel between this kind of view of a 
mail conversation, and a recording of an IM session.  I don't do much IM, so 
I haven't seen any archival interfaces, but it seems to me you don't want to 
store every one-line response as an item in the UI, but the digest of the 
entire conversation is valuable.  Perhaps I'm wrong, but it seems that the 
metadata of each one-liner would be much greater than the message itself -- 
highly costly compared to the metadata for the whole conversation factored 
out.
