[Design] view/filters: visually distinguish based on addressing typeKaitlin Duck Sherwood Tue, 05 Nov 2002 17:37:40 -0800
I'd like it if Chandler would subtly change the display of a message in the list of messages depending upon how it was addressed: TO only me, TO me and others, CC only me, CC me and others, and BCC me (i.e. I'm not in the TO or CC line). This could be implemented as a filter action, e.g. always change message color to grey if incoming message CC field contains me change message color to black if incoming message CC field is me change message color to brown if incoming message TO field contains me change message color to green if incoming message TO field is me change message color to red It could also be implemented as a view option (which is how Outlook 2000 does it). This is a medium-priority request: lacking it won't kill Chandler, but boy is it nice to have. It's one of the tips that makes my Outlook clients' eyes really light up. * Note that indicating the addressing scheme should be orthogonal to indicating what category the message is in. One might be tempted to sort messages by the addressing scheme and color by category. While I don't want to forbid that, I think it's less useful than sorting by category. It's unpleasantly common to spend a lot of time carefully crafting a response to a message, sending, and continuing reading... only to find that someone else answered that question. When related messages are grouped together, it's easier to read all the messages on a topic before replying to any. Yes, yes, threading messages helps -- but threading properly requires the cooperation of the sender (if you thread based on subject line) or the sender's email client (if you thread based on Message-ID). -- Kaitlin Duck Sherwood Author of the _Overcome Email Overload_ series, http://www.EmailOverload.com
