Thanks. that's really quite amazing - you said in one sentence what took 
me three paragraphs ;-)

I don't have an account on your bugzilla so I'll comment here if that's O.K.

To me, it should work the same whether in list or calendar view. Why 
make it different? I'd just leave the checkboxes next to the collection 
names and maintain the state of those checkboxes between views.

It does appear to remember my checkbox selection in calendar view when I 
switch back and forth. And it continues [correctly] to display the 
"selected" collection name between views. I'd just keep the checkboxes 
and make both views display whatever is chosen, be it one, none, or more 
collections.
