My apologies for all the noise.

After I did some more digging, I noticed that the commons-logging and 
log4j jar files were probably required by Cosmo. But I had removed them 
from the common lib directory as there were multiple versions in various 
application's local lib directories too.

I saw that cosmo didn;t have these in it's local lib so I copied them 
from my original build dir into $catalina_home/webapps/cosmo/WEB-INF/lib 
and restarted tomcat.

All seems O.K. now.
