As a bit of a "lurker" you might also want to ask the chaps who do the 
Lightning Calendar extension for Thunderbird 
(dev-apps-calendar at lists.mozilla.org). They have recently added local 
off-line storage and syncing to Caldav calendars. I use Lightning and a 
Cosmo server and it seems to work fine. Lightning still needs a bit of 
polish, but it works!
