This is not the problem, this just exacerbates the problem. The work  
that needs to be done for this affects  a lot of the code base and  
could introduce lots of regressions - it's not a simple matter of  
just removing "sync = true".

This work does need to be done, but should not go on the 0.9 branch.  
The ONLY thing IMHO that should go on that 0.9 branch is the server- 
side performance fix.

Let's not needlessly introduce extra variables.
