is there ever an instance where you would change the start date of a
master and *not* delete and re-add the modifications? if not, then no
query parameter is required.

after thinking about it more, i agree with you.

i have plenty of bandwidth - more than any of the rest of you, it
appears. my objection was not on the grounds that i didn't have time
to write the code but rather that i thought it was the wrong thing to
do. i've now withdrawn that objection and will write the code.
