+1, but I need some clarification (sorry I didn't mention this wrinkle
earlier).  When subscribing via CalDAV, or importing an ics file, should
the Desktop attempt to match up inbound icalUIDs with existing icalUIDs?

I think we need this, if you're subscribed read-only to a monolithic ics
file, you don't want to get a million dupes.  Doing that will mean
indexing items by icalUID again, which is fine, I just wanted to be sure
that's what we want.
