took a little longer than i'd hoped to get the rpc service working,
but it's done now except for a stubbed out method or two which bobby
will fill in once we're on the trunk. otherwise, everything looks
good.

tomorrow morning i'll begin merging to the trunk. please do not commit
to the cosmo trunk from 7am tomorrow until i give the all clear.
