everything vinu says is true, in answer to the question "why would
somebody store their personal addressbook in a caldav server instead
of an ldap directory?"

there are many reasons why an IT staff would use ldap, and managing
personal addressbooks is usually low on that list :) and as vinu
points out, security is usually much more of a factor in corporate
directories than in personal addressbooks.
