There really is nothing stopping OSAF apps from
being very tightly integrated yet being based on
open standards, protocols, and APIs.  As long as
these interfaces are properly designed and
documented.

The 'Ecosystem' design goals are not at odds with
the use of published standards.

This does not give you much of a performance
improvement.  Webmail clients sit on IMAP
servers frequently without performance issues.

TCP loopback interface is very fast, and often
used for IPC.  Doubt it will be a performance
bottleneck.
