There is kind of.  LDAP directory can contain
multiple domains.  What's often called a 'forest'
An LDAP server can hand-off requests for
particular domains to other servers.  The
problem is those domains have to be defined
before hand.  

I can see though how 'ad-hoc' LDAP servers joining
your authentication server would be quite risky.
