In that case, yes extending ical4j makes sense. The only problem that I
foresee - a direct patch might fail sometimes. That should be relatively
easy to fix if the steps are clearly documented and after some manual
inspection of the patch file.

Yeah thats true, it does have the same kind of format with BEGIN,
name:value pairs etc. So yes we could possibly use that part of the code
and extend iCal4j to support vCard. 

For a start I will be using vCard4j and think about better options
later.
