Incidentally, iCal (Mac OS X 10.5.7) interop with this type of item seems
good: 

• edition of one appearance (in one collection) will be reflected in other
appearances after iCal refreshes the account

• removal of one appearance (from one collection) does not remove the item
from its other collections.
