It's both simpler and worse than that.
Putting your repository on any kind of remote/network filesystem is  
not supported because the locking semantics are generally flaky on  
these. This is a limitation of the underlying database system,  
Berkeley DB. We've had a long standing bug that calls for detecting,  
reliably, that your repository is created on such a filesystem and  
preventing it from happening.
