Are you using caldav (ical 3 only, url has "dav" in it) or webcal (loads 
a single calendar as an .ics file, url has "webcal" in it)?  Are these 
large calendars?  When you say "loads and loads", does the request 
eventually time out with an error on the client?  Is there some 
indication in the logs that the server received a request from the 
client?  The last few lines may be helpful.
