[chandler-users] Chandler experiences: Memory and performance issues

Dear Chandler developers,
so I am giving a try to Chandler as my next organizer application. I
like the underlying concept very much (at least as far as I understand
it) and I think there's a lot of potential in it. However, I have a big
problem with Chandler desktop on my WinXP box - it is extremely memory
hungry. It's so bad, that the whole application is unusable :-(.
When Chandler is running in a "normal" mode, i.e. I am doing nothing
just open it, it allocates 190MB of RAM. At least that's what the
Windows Task Manager shows by the process pythonw.exe. Now, in my
opinion, this is unacceptable for a PIM application. When I try to close
it, it goes up to about 230MB and only then closes. Start of Chandler
Desktop takes almost 3 minutes. Exit another 2. Even moving a mouse
above the menus is sluggish - as menus open and highlight only seconds
after the mouse is already elsewhere. Switching between Dashboard and
Calendar collection takes 30+ seconds... I mean, this is not a very
user-friendly application :-(.
I just checked the minimal requirements for use of Chandler at
http://chandlerproject.org/Projects/FAQ#*Q*%20%20What%20are%20the%20minimum/recomm
and I see my HW just meets those requirements. Now I do not want to
sound offensive, but I can easily run graphics manipulating programs
such as Photoshop, Blender, GIMP etc. on my laptop, but I cannot run a
PIM application because of its HW requirements? Could it be that the
problem is because I imported 2000+ events from my Palm Desktop into
Chandler?
To sum up, I tend to believe that the whole issue is due to Python as an
implementation language... :-(
So I have a question: Is there anything I can do to make Chandler run
faster on my computer except for buying a new one? Actually, I would
expect such a PIM app run on any Linux enabled handheld as well (e.g. my
Sharp Zaurus), but obviously this is an unthinkable adventure - I do not
have so much memory there...
In the case there will be nothing what I can do to make the thing
faster, I am afraid, this will be the terminal station for me on the
Chandler train :-(.
Thanks for any advice you might have.
Best regards,
Peter.
