Yup, this is a major annoyance.  Various remedies have been suggested, 
ranging from remembering your first answer to the question until you 
select a different item, to adding UI in the detail view that lets you 
choose what your changes apply to, without requiring a dialog.

In the meantime, Cmd+S will save any changes in the currently selected 
item and pop up the recurrence dialog for you.
