In principle, your suggestion makes perfect sense. In practice, a task 
or event is not DONE until I have actually DONE something with it, e.g., 
finished it. Only then I can consider it DONE. While I like the idea of 
past-dated items being moved automatically to DONE, I'm not sure I like 
the idea of them moving without my having "signed-off" on them. Besides 
the practical value in making sure that I've specifically addressed all 
my items, I enjoy the psychological impact of checking something off as 
DONE. (I'm sure that's a consequence of my personality type.)
