That's not entirely correct -- Phillip Eby is actively working on the 
rearchitecture.

But perhaps Jeffrey's point is that we decided against putting more 
developers on the rearchitecture project -- which means that we're 
living with the current desktop code base for the time being. That 
tradeoff involves living with some performance problems for a while, 
especially for older hardware without the large amounts of memory that 
new machines tend to have.

We do take the desktop performance issues seriously -- unfortunately we 
don't have a quick fix.
