Hmm. Somethings not right, then. That number should be close to
constant on export and reload.

Purge does much of what export/reload does, but not all. It's not clear
to me that it's worth reloading in an attempt to improve performance,
because the reload process takes a while. Part of what gradually slows
Chandler down is that different combinations of collections are indexed
(for viewing multiple collections overlaid). The combinations are
created on the fly when you first view them. Reloading drops those
indexes, so the next time you need them they'll have to be re-created.
Personally I don't bother exporting/reloading very often, but it's a
fine approach if it works for you!
